Pilates places emphasis on core strength, this is also a key component of Callanetics. (Callanetics has more emphasis on hip, behind and thigh toning though works entire body.) Both Pilates and Callanetics are low impact and great for back health.
Pilates is suitable for any age and fitness level – and can be adapted for those with mobility problems. Research shows that exercise slows down the aging process and the progression of disease – important for arthritics and the elderly.
Through exercise, improvement can be seen in joint function, muscle strength and mass, regulation of blood sugar tolerance, body fat percentage, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, internal temperature and weight bearing bone density. Gentle and controlled exercise can be very effective in maximising medical treatment for such illnesses as arthritis and it’s various forms, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, ME etc.
Pilates can have a positive effect on creating new neuromuscular patterns in the body. Exercise in any form is a great tool against depression.
